Prehabilitation for cancer patients
To achieve the best results with the fewest complications for our cancer patients, IVOQA offers its patients exclusively through private healthcare the full benefit of prehabilitation before surgery and ERAS® programmes following surgery.
Dr. Delia Cortés Guiral pioneered the development of prehabilitation protocols for patients with advanced cancer. She co-authored the ERAS® international guidelines for patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis and is responsible for the content of the ERAS® website for patients undergoing cytoreductive and HIPEC surgery. She tells us what it is and why prehabilitation and ERAS protocols are crucial to optimise the treatment of cancer patients.
Prehabilitation consists of a set of actions before surgery aimed at optimising the patient’s state of health, so that they come to surgery in the best possible condition. Just as an athlete trains before a race, surgery subjects our body to a substantial degree of stress, and if we train the organs and systems that will respond to that stress in advance, surgery will be much more painless and with fewer complications.
The patient will know in advance what each day will be like after their operation, and which ERAS measures will be carried out every day, such as early mobilisation, physical and respiratory exercises, diet… to guarantee the best possible recovery.
Our patients enter a circuit with the aim of improving their immune system, healing capacity, heart and lung function, nutritional status, sleep quality, and psychological status against cancer
To do this, the programme consists of:
This is crucial. The nutritional status of the patient is assessed, measures are taken accordingly, and supplements are prescribed.
Exercise programme and rehabilitation in the gym if needed.
The patient learns and practises the respiratory physiotherapy exercises that they will be doing from the first day after their operation to avoid pneumonia, atelectasis, and other postoperative complications.
Haematologists analyse bone marrow function because our patients have often received chemotherapy, and evaluating their responsiveness is essential in preventing complications.
Assessment by a psycho-oncologist is an essential part of dealing with cancer surgery and the entire process both for our patient and their family.
