BromAC (Minimally invasive treatment for patients with inoperable peritoneal pseudomyxoma)

What is BromAC?

BromAC is a minimally invasive treatment for patients with peritoneal pseudomyxoma that is inoperable because of its spread, the location of the primary diagnosis, or after recurrence.

It is composed of a mixture of bromelain and acetylcysteine, substances with mucolytic properties (they dissolve mucin, the main component of peritoneal pseudomyxoma). The drug is imported from Australia through a rigorous process by the Spanish Medicines Agency, so that our patients can receive this treatment at IVOQA.

How does it work?

Under local anaesthesia, one of our interventional radiologists will place a drain that will reach the areas where the mucin has accumulated. Through this drain, successive doses of BromAC will be administered with the intention of dissolving the tumour.

It has also been used to enhance the effect of chemotherapy on aggressive tumours such as sarcomas or pancreatic cancer.
