A lack of information is often the first major obstacle in cancer treatment. The PSOGI 2025 Manifesto highlights that global awareness and education are the most powerful tools to prevent late diagnoses. At Viamed, through IVOQA, we join this commitment to ensure these pathologies are no longer invisible to both society and the medical community.
The Problem of Invisibility in Peritoneal Cancer
Peritoneal malignancies are rare and, consequently, often overlooked. This widespread lack of knowledge leads to diagnostic errors and the loss of critical opportunities for timely treatment.
Current Challenges: Why do we arrive late?
The manifesto identifies four main barriers that we must break down:
- Symptom Confusion: Many patients report that their warning signs were initially dismissed or investigated as common conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gynecological disorders, or minor digestive issues.
- Professional Lack of Awareness: Some members of the medical community may be unfamiliar with the clinical presentation and progression of tumors like Peritoneal Pseudomyxoma (PMP) or Mesothelioma.
- Lack of Public Visibility: Cancer awareness campaigns rarely include the peritoneal surface.
- Institutional Vacuum: In many countries, national health plans do not specifically mention these tumors, limiting the resources available for their detection.
Our Expectations for the Future
At IVOQA, we share the vision of the PSOGI 2025 Manifesto: a world where initial symptoms prompt proper investigation, where patients are truly heard, and where awareness saves lives.
Action Plan by IVOQA and Viamed
To meet the manifesto’s objectives, our centers drive three core areas of action:
- Increasing Visibility: Disseminating rigorous information about PMP, appendix cancer, and peritoneal carcinomatosis.
- Continuous Medical Education: Collaborating in the training of primary care physicians to improve early diagnosis rates.
- Multilingual Information: Providing patients and their families with access to clear and understandable resources regarding their therapeutic options.
Education is the first step toward healing.
IVOQA’s commitment is to ensure that no patient with a peritoneal malignancy feels invisible or alone in their process.
